Definition: Age gap is the exact interval between two people's dates of birth, expressed as completed years, months and days — a constant that never changes as both people get older.
Quick answer: How do you calculate the age gap between two people?
Measure the interval between the two birth dates, not between their current ages. Someone born 4 June 1988 and someone born 19 January 1993 have a gap of 4 years, 7 months and 15 days — that figure is fixed for life.
Comparing rounded current ages is the usual source of error: two people can appear 4 years apart in January and 5 years apart in July while the true gap never moved. The gap in whole years also only equals the difference in birth years when the later-born person's birthday has already passed relative to the other's.

Method: exactly how the age is calculated
SnapAgeCalc uses the Western (calendar) convention: age is the number of complete years, then complete months, then whole days elapsed between the date of birth and the target date. Nothing is rounded up.
- Completed years: count full anniversaries passed. A person born 1 July 1990, measured on 30 June 2026, is 35 — not 36.
- Completed months: from the last birthday, count full calendar months. Month lengths are used as they actually are (28–31 days), never averaged to 30.
- Remaining days: the whole days left after years and months are removed. Partial days are truncated, never rounded up.
- Totals: total days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds are measured directly between the two timestamps, independent of the years/months breakdown.
- Order is irrelevant: the gap is the absolute interval, so swapping the two birth dates returns the same years, months and days.
Leap years, month lengths and date assumptions
- Leap years follow the Gregorian rule: divisible by 4, except centuries, unless divisible by 400. 2000 was a leap year; 1900 and 2100 are not.
- For a 29 February birth date in a common year, the calculator treats 1 March as the day the next full year is completed — the legal convention in most jurisdictions, including the UK and most US states.
- If a target day-of-month does not exist in the target month (for example 31 in February), the calculation clamps to the last valid day of that month.
- When no time of day is supplied, birth is assumed to be at 00:00 local time and the comparison is made in your device's local timezone.
Limitations
- Results are chronological age only. They are not a measure of biological, developmental or corrected age.
- East Asian age reckoning (where a person is 1 at birth) is not used. Those systems can differ from the result here by one or two years.
- Crossing timezones or daylight-saving boundaries can shift hour-level totals by up to one hour. Year, month and day figures are unaffected.
- Leap seconds are ignored, as they are unpredictable for future dates.
- Generation labels (Gen X, Millennial, Gen Z) follow commonly cited year ranges; these boundaries are conventions from demographic commentary, not official definitions, and vary between sources by a year or two.

A gap is a fact, not an approximation
Most people describe an age gap by subtracting birth years — "we're four years apart." That number is almost always wrong by anywhere from a day to nearly a full year. Two people born eleven months apart will sometimes report being the "same age" and sometimes "a year apart," even though the real distance between them never moved. This calculator returns the fixed span — the one that doesn't change on birthdays and doesn't depend on the day you ask.

The timeline reversal, explained
A number like "3 years, 6 months" is easy to compute but hard to feel. The reversal reframes it as a shared calendar. If your partner is 3 years, 6 months older than you, this tool tells you exactly when they were the age you are today — a real date, on a real weekday, that you can picture. It also projects the mirror image: the future date when you'll reach the age they are now. Two dates, one gap, three ways of looking at the same fact.
