    Definition: Chronological age is the exact time elapsed between a date of birth and an assessment date, expressed as completed years, months and days — the input norm-referenced tests are scored against.

    Quick answer: How do you calculate chronological age for a test or assessment?

    Subtract the date of birth from the assessment date and report completed years, months and days — for example, a child born 12 March 2019 assessed on 5 September 2026 is 7 years, 5 months and 24 days old. Never round the days up: most standardised test manuals band by year and month, and a single day can move a child into a different norm band.

    Two conventions differ between manuals. Some score in years and months only (discarding days), while others use a years;months notation such as 7;5. This calculator gives you all three units so you can apply whichever rule your manual specifies, and it never converts months to a flat 30 days.

    Method: exactly how the age is calculated

    SnapAgeCalc uses the Western (calendar) convention: age is the number of complete years, then complete months, then whole days elapsed between the date of birth and the target date. Nothing is rounded up.

    1. Completed years: count full anniversaries passed. A person born 1 July 1990, measured on 30 June 2026, is 35 — not 36.
    2. Completed months: from the last birthday, count full calendar months. Month lengths are used as they actually are (28–31 days), never averaged to 30.
    3. Remaining days: the whole days left after years and months are removed. Partial days are truncated, never rounded up.
    4. Totals: total days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds are measured directly between the two timestamps, independent of the years/months breakdown.
    5. Assessment date is treated as a whole day: the child is credited with the age reached at the start of that day, not a part-day fraction.

    Leap years, month lengths and date assumptions

    • Leap years follow the Gregorian rule: divisible by 4, except centuries, unless divisible by 400. 2000 was a leap year; 1900 and 2100 are not.
    • For a 29 February birth date in a common year, the calculator treats 1 March as the day the next full year is completed — the legal convention in most jurisdictions, including the UK and most US states.
    • If a target day-of-month does not exist in the target month (for example 31 in February), the calculation clamps to the last valid day of that month.
    • When no time of day is supplied, birth is assumed to be at 00:00 local time and the comparison is made in your device's local timezone.

    Limitations

    • Results are chronological age only. They are not a measure of biological, developmental or corrected age.
    • East Asian age reckoning (where a person is 1 at birth) is not used. Those systems can differ from the result here by one or two years.
    • Crossing timezones or daylight-saving boundaries can shift hour-level totals by up to one hour. Year, month and day figures are unaffected.
    • Leap seconds are ignored, as they are unpredictable for future dates.
    • Chronological age is not corrected age. For infants born preterm, subtract the number of weeks of prematurity from the chronological age separately, as your protocol requires.

    How to calculate chronological age by hand

    The manual method uses a three-column subtraction — years, months, days — with borrowing between columns. It's the technique taught in every psychoeducational assessment course and the one every calculator (including this one) reproduces under the hood.

    Worked example

    Assessment date: 2026-07-08  ·  Date of birth: 2019-11-22

    1. Days: 8 − 22 → borrow 30 days from months → 38 − 22 = 16 days.
    2. Months: (7 − 1 borrowed) − 11 → 6 − 11 → borrow 12 months from years → 18 − 11 = 7 months.
    3. Years: (2026 − 1 borrowed) − 2019 = 2025 − 2019 = 6 years.
    4. Result: 6 years, 7 months, 16 days.

    The most common manual errors are (1) forgetting to borrow when days go negative and (2) using 31 instead of 30 days when borrowing. Test publishers explicitly recommend the 30-day borrow rule so that scoring is consistent across examiners.

    Chronological age vs corrected age vs biological age

    • Chronological age — pure elapsed time between DOB and reference date. The default for legal age, school entry, testing norms, and everyday questions like "how old am I."
    • Corrected (adjusted) age — chronological age minus the weeks of prematurity. Used for developmental screening of infants born before 37 weeks, typically until 2–3 years of age.
    • Biological age — an estimate of the body's "wear" based on biomarkers (telomeres, methylation, fitness, blood markers). Not a date calculation and not what test norms use.

    For infants born before 37 weeks gestation, paediatricians track corrected age alongside chronological age until 2–3 years.

    Why exact days matter for test scoring

    Norm-referenced tests convert raw scores to standard scores through age tables that are stratified in narrow bands — often one month wide, sometimes less. A child scored in the wrong band can end up with a standard score off by 5–10 points, which is the difference between "average" and "borderline." That is why examiner manuals (WISC-V, WPPSI-IV, WIAT-4, KTEA-3, PLS-5, CELF-5, Bayley-4, and others) require chronological age to be computed to the exact day of the assessment, not the nearest month.
