Definition: Date difference is the number of complete days, weeks, months and years between two calendar dates using the Gregorian calendar.
Quick answer: How many days are there between two dates?
The difference between two dates is the count of whole days elapsed from the earlier date to the later one, counting leap days as they actually occur. The end date is not counted as an extra day unless you include it deliberately.
Weeks are whole days divided by seven and truncated; months are complete calendar months, not 30-day approximations.

Worked examples (calculated, not hardcoded)
Each row below is computed by the same age engine the calculator uses, measured on 28 Aug 2026. Ages advance by one day each day, so treat the reference date as the baseline.
| Date of birth | Age (years, months, days) | Completed years | Total days | Next birthday |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 56 y, 5 m, 13 d | 56 | 20,620 | in 199 days (turns 57) | |
| 41 y, 1 m, 27 d | 41 | 15,033 | in 307 days (turns 42) | |
| 35 y, 9 m, 6 d | 35 | 13,063 | in 86 days (turns 36) | |
| 26 y, 7 m, 27 d | 26 | 9,736 | in 126 days (turns 27) | |
| 22 y, 5 m, 30 d | 22 | 8,216 | in 185 days (turns 23) |

Method: exactly how the age is calculated
SnapAgeCalc uses the Western (calendar) convention: age is the number of complete years, then complete months, then whole days elapsed between the date of birth and the target date. Nothing is rounded up.
- Completed years: count full anniversaries passed. A person born 1 July 1990, measured on 30 June 2026, is 35 — not 36.
- Completed months: from the last birthday, count full calendar months. Month lengths are used as they actually are (28–31 days), never averaged to 30.
- Remaining days: the whole days left after years and months are removed. Partial days are truncated, never rounded up.
- Totals: total days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds are measured directly between the two timestamps, independent of the years/months breakdown.
- Day counts are inclusive of the start date and exclusive of the end date, which is the standard convention for durations.
Leap years, month lengths and date assumptions
- Leap years follow the Gregorian rule: divisible by 4, except centuries, unless divisible by 400. 2000 was a leap year; 1900 and 2100 are not.
- For a 29 February birth date in a common year, the calculator treats 1 March as the day the next full year is completed — the legal convention in most jurisdictions, including the UK and most US states.
- If a target day-of-month does not exist in the target month (for example 31 in February), the calculation clamps to the last valid day of that month.
- When no time of day is supplied, birth is assumed to be at 00:00 local time and the comparison is made in your device's local timezone.
Limitations
- Results are chronological age only. They are not a measure of biological, developmental or corrected age.
- East Asian age reckoning (where a person is 1 at birth) is not used. Those systems can differ from the result here by one or two years.
- Crossing timezones or daylight-saving boundaries can shift hour-level totals by up to one hour. Year, month and day figures are unaffected.
- Leap seconds are ignored, as they are unpredictable for future dates.
- Daylight-saving transitions can shift an hour-level difference by up to one hour; whole-day counts are unaffected.

The Math Behind Days, Weeks, and Months
Counting days sounds simple until February throws a curveball. Or until you need business days only. Or until someone argues whether "one month later" means 28, 30, or 31 days. This calculator handles the edge cases that trip up mental math and basic spreadsheet formulas. For a deeper dive, read our article: How to Calculate Age Between Two Dates.
Project managers track deadlines in business days — our exclude-weekends toggle calculates exactly that. Contract lawyers count calendar days for notice periods. Parents calculate exactly how many days until summer vacation (and exactly how many they've survived so far). Event planners need both the countdown and the retrospective to measure against past events.
Real Applications, Real Precision
Landlords and tenants argue over lease terms measured in months. Employers calculate probation periods. Pregnant women track weeks with precision that friends and family can't match. Credit card companies count days for interest calculations. In each case, the difference between 30 and 31 days — or 365 and 366 — changes outcomes. Learn more: Why Your Exact Age Matters.
