    Quick answer: How do I express age in years, months and days?

    Take the complete years since birth, then the complete calendar months since the last birthday, then the whole days remaining — for example 35 years, 8 months and 12 days. Each component is a completed unit, so nothing is rounded up.

    Because calendar months are 28 to 31 days long, the day component is calculated against the real month length, not an averaged 30-day month.

    Method: exactly how the age is calculated

    SnapAgeCalc uses the Western (calendar) convention: age is the number of complete years, then complete months, then whole days elapsed between the date of birth and the target date. Nothing is rounded up.

    1. Completed years: count full anniversaries passed. A person born 1 July 1990, measured on 30 June 2026, is 35 — not 36.
    2. Completed months: from the last birthday, count full calendar months. Month lengths are used as they actually are (28–31 days), never averaged to 30.
    3. Remaining days: the whole days left after years and months are removed. Partial days are truncated, never rounded up.
    4. Totals: total days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds are measured directly between the two timestamps, independent of the years/months breakdown.

    Leap years, month lengths and date assumptions

    • Leap years follow the Gregorian rule: divisible by 4, except centuries, unless divisible by 400. 2000 was a leap year; 1900 and 2100 are not.
    • For a 29 February birth date in a common year, the calculator treats 1 March as the day the next full year is completed — the legal convention in most jurisdictions, including the UK and most US states.
    • If a target day-of-month does not exist in the target month (for example 31 in February), the calculation clamps to the last valid day of that month.
    • When no time of day is supplied, birth is assumed to be at 00:00 local time and the comparison is made in your device's local timezone.

    Limitations

    • Results are chronological age only. They are not a measure of biological, developmental or corrected age.
    • East Asian age reckoning (where a person is 1 at birth) is not used. Those systems can differ from the result here by one or two years.
    • Crossing timezones or daylight-saving boundaries can shift hour-level totals by up to one hour. Year, month and day figures are unaffected.
    • Leap seconds are ignored, as they are unpredictable for future dates.
    • The years-months-days breakdown is not additive with total-days figures: 1 month may be 28, 29, 30 or 31 days depending on where it falls.

    How the Breakdown Is Computed

    The years-months-days format uses a cascading subtraction. First, complete years are counted from your birth date to today. Then, within the remaining period (less than a full year), complete months are counted. Finally, the leftover days after those months are tallied. This gives the most human-readable result — "28 years, 3 months, 12 days" — which matches how doctors, lawyers, and government agencies express age.

    This cascading approach is important because it handles month-length variations naturally. If you were born January 31 and it's currently March 5, the calculator determines that one complete month has passed (January 31 to February 28/29) and then counts the remaining days into March. Different month lengths don't create ambiguity — the algorithm resolves them consistently.

    The Day Changes Every 24 Hours

    At midnight, the "days" number in your breakdown either stays the same (if you're mid-month) or resets to 0 while the months number increments. On your birth date each year, all three reset in a cascade: years goes up by one, months goes to 0, days goes to 0. Understanding this rhythm is key to knowing when your exact age changes.
