Method: exactly how the age is calculated
SnapAgeCalc uses the Western (calendar) convention: age is the number of complete years, then complete months, then whole days elapsed between the date of birth and the target date. Nothing is rounded up.
- Completed years: count full anniversaries passed. A person born 1 July 1990, measured on 30 June 2026, is 35 — not 36.
- Completed months: from the last birthday, count full calendar months. Month lengths are used as they actually are (28–31 days), never averaged to 30.
- Remaining days: the whole days left after years and months are removed. Partial days are truncated, never rounded up.
- Totals: total days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds are measured directly between the two timestamps, independent of the years/months breakdown.
- Exact age also reports hours, minutes and seconds elapsed since the birth timestamp; if no birth time is entered, 00:00 local time is assumed.
Leap years, month lengths and date assumptions
- Leap years follow the Gregorian rule: divisible by 4, except centuries, unless divisible by 400. 2000 was a leap year; 1900 and 2100 are not.
- For a 29 February birth date in a common year, the calculator treats 1 March as the day the next full year is completed — the legal convention in most jurisdictions, including the UK and most US states.
- If a target day-of-month does not exist in the target month (for example 31 in February), the calculation clamps to the last valid day of that month.
- When no time of day is supplied, birth is assumed to be at 00:00 local time and the comparison is made in your device's local timezone.
Limitations
- Results are chronological age only. They are not a measure of biological, developmental or corrected age.
- East Asian age reckoning (where a person is 1 at birth) is not used. Those systems can differ from the result here by one or two years.
- Crossing timezones or daylight-saving boundaries can shift hour-level totals by up to one hour. Year, month and day figures are unaffected.
- Leap seconds are ignored, as they are unpredictable for future dates.

How Exact Age Is Calculated
"Exact" means no rounding, no approximation. The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar's actual structure — accounting for months of different lengths, leap years, and the precise current timestamp — to compute the difference between your birth moment and now. The result cascades from years to months to days, with each unit representing the remainder after the larger unit is subtracted.
Beyond the primary breakdown, the tool also computes flat totals: total days, total weeks, and total seconds alive. These flat counts provide a single-number perspective that's useful for comparison. "10,957 days" is harder to fathom than "30 years," but it's also more precise and more thought-provoking. The two formats complement each other.
When Exact Age Actually Matters
Precision matters more than you might think. Legal age thresholds — driving at 16, voting at 18, certain benefits at 65 — are calculated to the exact day. You can't vote the day before you turn 18, but you can the day of. Insurance actuaries price policies based on exact age bands. Medical dosing guidelines for children use age in months, not years. In competitive sports, age-group classifications often depend on birth dates within specific windows.
Financial planning is another domain where exact age drives decisions. Social Security benefits in the US vary depending on the exact month you start claiming. Pension calculations use age to the day. Even mortgage applications factor in your age when projecting long-term repayment schedules. In each case, "about 65" isn't good enough — the system needs the exact number.
